The Big Payback is a highly versatile compressor in just three knobs. Unlike many other comps, especially in this form factor, the Big Payback offers a crushing 40:1 compression ratio. That’s monstrous, making the Big Payback good for subtle tonal enhancement up through oppressively squished chicken-pickin’ notes that gasp for air.
Two knobs—Attack and Compression—are key to dialing in the right amount of squeeze as well as accessing the two secret functions of the Big Payback. Turning down the Attack control all the way will enter the Auto Swell mode. By hitting your instrument hard, the resulting tone swells in for a cool lap-steel like effect.
By turning Attack all the way up and Compression all the way down, you can access the Dynamic-Expander setting—a sort of inside-out compression effect that makes everything you play sound like a gold record. At least.
